What can you do to prevent the bird flu pandemic from
affecting you and your family?
Unfortunately, modern medical science doesn't have a magic bullet you can
take that will protect you against the H5N1 virus. Be advised, even with huge
government efforts to produce an effective vaccine, should one become
available to the general public, there will be massive vaccine shortages.
No
vaccine can be produced until the exact strain causing a real pandemic has
been identified.

You need to be prepared for a bird flu pandemic by:
  1. Stockpiling some food, water and basic medical supplies in the
event the pandemic strikes. This will minimize your need to venture out until the
worst is over in your area. Such basic stockpiles are a good idea in any event, to
protect against natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods or
man made terrorist attacks. In addition basic services may be disrupted in many
areas because a majority of workers will be out sick. You should have enough
supplies to last for a minimum of two weeks, but a month would be better.
  2. Having some money saved in the event you cannot work due to personal
illness or the need to care for sick family members. Be aware many business
could close temporarily or permanently due to illness or death of key personnel.
This could easily include your employer.
  3. Make sure you are in good health with good nutrition and
exercise habits. This will help you survive any flu, not just a pandemic from
the bird flu, H5N1. Make sure you wash your hands consistently and thoroughly
with a good soap. Antibacterial soap does no good since the Influenza is a
    virus, not a bacterium.
  4. Cook all your poultry thoroughly. This will reduce your chance of getting
the bird flu at all before it mutates into an actual pandemic. In many countries,
people slaughter and butcher their birds at home. According to health officials,
this is when infection occurs, not when eating a properly cooked animal. Wear
gloves when handling birds. Better yet, if there is H5N1 in your area, don't eat
    poultry.

Destroying chickens infected

Protect your children!
On May 9th, 2006, Donald Low, one of Canada's top scientists and head of
the mirobiology department at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, warned that
the H5N1 influenza strain will disproportionately hit school age children. This
is similar to the pattern observed in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

Flu Pandemic Protection Strategies to Save Your Life -
  • Antiviral medication - One of the only effective antiviral medicines for
influenza, Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate), may have somewhat
limited effectiveness against the avian strain, H5N1 compared to the
traditional flu strains. Many people, however, are stockpiling it anyway,
if they can get it, because it has a very long shelf life (about 5 years)
and some protection will be much better than no protection at all.

Supplies have been limited in the U.S. by Roche as a defense against
hoarding. They are certain to be even more limited once a pandemic is
underway, so it would be best to stock some now if the product is
available. Be advised, it is fairly expensive, but in a pandemic situation,
any that you get now will seem like a great bargain. You can get some
here if there is any in stock. The latest reports indicate there is some
    available.

An additional antiviral medication used to combat the influenza virus is
Amantadine. This drug has a very limited effect against the H5N1 virus
when used by itself. However, it has shown some promise when
combined with oseltamivir, the active compound in Tamiflu. These types
of trials are still in the experimental stage. You can get some
    Amantadine here.

Another antiviral medication that has shown some promise against the
H5N1 bird flu virus is Glaxo Smith Kline's Zanamavir. Glaxo markets this
antiviral drug under the trade name Relenza. It uses an inhaler for
delivery. GSK has not marketed this medication very effectively due to
competition from Tamiflu and several other factors. It is difficult to find.

UPDATE: Two victims in Vietnam died in mid December, despite having
full courses of Tamiflu treatment. This raises concern among health
officials that Tamiflu may be becoming more resistant to the antiviral
    medication.

NOTE: The developer of Tamiflu, Gilead Sciences, defeated Swiss
pharmacy giant Roche Holding AG, in a license suit on November 16th,
2005. Under the terms of the agreement, Roche will pay Gilead $62
million dollars in retroactive royalty payments. The two firms will
establish a joint committee to coordinate the global manufacturing of
    the antiviral medication.

  • Vitamin C supplementation is thought by some authorities to very
important for not only preventing but surviving the bird flu. You need
massive doses, but not so much you exceed your daily tolerance, which
could cause bowel irritation and dehydration. You will need to
experiment to find your individual tolerance.

Ester-C (Calcium Ascorbate) by Nature's Science is one of the most
readily absorbable forms of Vitamin C and it is non-acidic for those with
sensitive stomachs. Furthermore, this formulation contains calcium, an
important mineral. It is highly recommended as a vitamin C supplement.

Symptoms of the bird flu

Bird flu symptoms are similar to symptoms of other types of influenza, as
follows:

  •    fever
  •    cough
  •    sore throat
  •    muscle aches
  •    conjunctivitis - more commonly known as "pink eye". Cases of the bird
flu have been known to manifest themselves with this as the first
    symptom.
  •     acute respiratory distress

Cases of bird flu are more likely to cause breathing problems and pneumonia,
and can be fatal. Most fatalities have been caused by respiratory failure as the
lungs fill with fluid.

Flu Vaccines

These are not for the H5N1 Influenza strain. They are for the traditional,
seasonal flu. There are two types of flu vaccine, active and inactive. The active
variety actually contains live Influenza virus and is typically administered as a
nasal spray. The trade name for this vaccine is FluMist. However, most vaccines
are of the inactive variety, and are administered as intramuscular injections into
the quadriceps muscle of the upper leg or the deltoid muscle in the shoulder.
The standard vaccines for those over 18 years of age are:
  • Fluarix from Glaxo Smith Klein Inc.
  • Fluvirin from Chiron Corp. - approved for those over 4 years of age
  • Fluzone by Sanofi Pastuer Inc. -  approved for those over 6 months

What Makes The H5N1 Virus So Lethal?
According to the latest reports, the bird flu virus owes some of its extraordinary
lethality to the way it effects the human immune system. The H5N1 virus
triggers a virtual explosion of the proteins known as cytokines and chemokines.
These rise to levels as much as 10 times what is experienced when contracting
traditional flu. This dramatic rise is responsible for severe airway inflammation
that is a major contributory factor in many deaths. It is especially lethal in
younger victims, whereas most influenza strains kill mainly the elderly.
